David Luiz names Messi & Ronaldo as only players capable of replacing Eden Hazard at Chelsea

Chelsea defender David Luiz has revealed his opinion that only two players on the planet would be capable of replacing the production of Real Madrid-bound teammate Eden Hazard at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea 4-1 Arsenal

The Blues took on London rivals Arsenal in the final of the Europa League in Baku last night.

The clash marked Chelsea’s final opportunity of the campaign to clinch silverware, after missing out on League Cup glory in heartbreaking fashion back in February.

In addition, adding further significance to the Baku showpiece was the fact that Maurizio Sarri headed into proceedings in search of his first-ever title as a manager.

When the 90 minutes were said and done last night, though, a stellar second-half showing on the part of the Stamford Bridge outfit saw Sarri put his trophy-less past firmly behind him.

Goals from Eden Hazard (2), former Arsenal man Olivier Giroud, and Pedro eventually saw Chelsea emerge with a comprehensive 4-1 victory.

‘Time for a new challenge’

One downer for fans of the Blues on an otherwise superb night, however, was the fact that the Europa League final looks, for all intents and purposes, to have come as Eden Hazard’s final appearance for the club.

On the back of his Man of the Match showing versus Arsenal, Belgian attacker Hazard admitted in a post-game interview with BT Sport that the end of his Chelsea career appears imminent, with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid looming:

Luiz on irreplaceable Hazard

And one of the 28-year-old’s teammates who feels as though Chelsea will face a tough task in their attempts to replace Hazard is defender David Luiz.

Speaking to reporters in the aftermath of his side’s European triumph last night, Luiz revealed his opinion that only one of two players could fill Hazard’s boots at Stamford Bridge:

‘That’s either Messi or Ronaldo.’

‘I think, if he goes, I just wish him all the best. He is a fantastic player, friend and guy. I’ve known him ever since he was so young here. I am so happy for him because the world knows who Eden Hazard is.’

‘It [moving on] is part of life. Some cycles finish, some cycles start.’

Luiz continued:

‘I think we have many, many talents within the club who can (try to) replace him. Callum [Hudson-Odoi] is great. Callum has known this club since he was young and he has the talents to one day try to be like Eden. It didn’t start so well because of the injury [Hudson-Odoi suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon last month], but it is time for him to improve in other sides [of his game].’

Maurizio Sarri’s agent to fly to London today to negotiate Chelsea exit – Di Marzio

As per a report from reliable Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, the agent of Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri will today begin negotiations with the Blues’ board to facilitate a move to Juventus.

Chelsea 4-1 Arsenal

Sarri’s men travelled to Baku, Azerbaijan last night, for a Europa League final clash with London rivals Arsenal.

While the Gunners required a victory to book their spot in next season’s Champions League, Chelsea had already done so, courtesy of a 3rd-placed Premier League finish.

Both sides, though, were looking for their first silverware of the campaign, with Maurizio Sarri in search of the first title of his career.

And, when all was said and done, clinch his first-ever trophy was exactly what the Chelsea boss managed, in emphatic fashion.

A dominant second-half display on the part of the Stamford Bridge outfit eventually saw goals from Eden Hazard (2), Olivier Giroud and Pedro lead the Blues to a comprehensive 4-1 win.

Juventus bound?

However, despite it being less than 24 hours since Chelsea tasted victory in Baku, reports have already begun to mount that the Italian is all set for a departure from the club.

In fact, as per the aforementioned report from the reliable Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Italia, Sarri’s agent, Fali Ramadani, is set to travel from Milan to London today to facilitate a deal to take the 60-year-old to Juventus.

‘The goal is to study an exit strategy that can please everyone.’

When questioned on his future last night, Sarri admitted that though he feels he ‘deserves’ to remain at Stamford Bridge, the final call is ultimately out of his hands:

‘I need to talk to the club and make sure I know what I can do for Chelsea and what Chelsea can do for me.’

‘I love the Premier League and I’m lucky I’m at Chelsea. But at the end of each season you have to sit down and talk.’

‘In my opinion, I deserve to stay at Chelsea. But my opinion is not enough.’

Antoine Griezmann left in limbo as Barcelona put deal ‘on ice’ – Marca

As per a report from Spanish outlet Marca, Barcelona have pulled out of their proposed deal to sign Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid.

Atleti exit

On the back of 5 hugely-successful years on the books of the Rojiblancos, Griezmann announced his intention to depart the Wanda Metropolitano 2 weeks ago.

After Atletico released a surprise statement, revealing that their star man had informed the club’s board that he would seek pastures new this summer, Griezmann himself provided a full explanation for his decision in a parting video:

‘It’s been an incredible five years. Thank you very much for everything. I will take you in my heart.’

Barca bound?

As such, Griezmann’s announcement has since led to inevitable speculation surrounding where the World Cup winner is set to end up next.

Atleti’s La Liga rivals Barcelona have been the outfit most persistently-touted as a potential destination, with the Blaugrana having initially been rumoured to be ready to activate the attacker’s 125 million Euro release clause.

In addition, Barca boss Ernesto Valverde subsequently went on to confirm that talks had already begun between the Spanish champions and Atletico over Griezmann last week:

‘It is true we have already made contacts. It is true that contacts are ongoing, but the season isn’t over yet.’

‘We will see (what happens). He (Griezmann) is a great player. We’ve always said so.’

Griezmann in limbo

However, while developments towards a deal being completed had since been expected, mounting reports have suggested that Barcelona are having second thoughts regarding Atleti’s star man.

In fact, Griezmann himself is said to have been left fuming with the Blaugrana’s squad, amid claims that a number of players have spoken out against his signing.

And Marca have this afternoon provided further insight into the decision of the board at the Camp Nou to back out of the deal.

Griezmann’s signing is no longer viewed as ‘a priority’, with the Frenchman’s price-tag and hefty wages a major stumbling block.

In addition, Griezmann’s turning down of the Catalan giants last summer is cited as the reason for the unrest among the club’s squad regarding his potential arrival over the coming months, with his reputation with the Blaugrana faithful having also taken a hit.

As such, for these reasons, Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu has put Griezmann’s signing ‘on ice’.

Finally Chelsea deliver what Maurizio Sarri wants but is it too late?

Waking up this morning having witnessed Chelsea finally deliver a performance that we all know we are more than capable of to beat Arsenal is immensely satisfying. Make no mistake, Chelsea dismantled Arsenal on the night and but for Petr Cech, it could have been a whole lot worse.

The Chelsea legend made FOUR outstanding saves to deny Chelsea in addition to the four goals he could do little about. It wasn’t nice to see the big man in tears with it being his last career game and I felt for him last night. Let’s welcome him back when he makes his expected return home as Sporting Director.

Maurizio Sarri deserves immense respect after this game because he has finally achieved a trophy in his 30-year managerial career.  Chelsea second half performance gave a demonstration of the football he has been trying to implement at Stamford Bridge.  It’s just a shame that we finally deliver when it looks like three or four important figures are going to leave the club with Sarri being one of them.  The manager was asked at the beginning of the season to finish inside the top four and still win a trophy.  He has delivered exactly that and credit to him. Speaking after the game he said that he feels that deserves to stay having achieved the clubs targets in a difficult season but what do you think? Should he be given the opportunity? Chelsea & Sarri odds – check out the offer from matchbook.

The first half was a struggle let’s be clear on that as Arsenal had started the better of the two sides.  Arsenal in the first half dominated Chelsea and had some half chances but never capitalised on their possession.  Chelsea and then grew into the game and carved Arsenal open just before halftime as Olivier Giroud forced the first save from Petr Cech.  It was a sign of things to come.

In that first half the Chelsea players worked hard without the ball.  To a man the Chelsea players make tackles, made important blocks with Cesar Azpilicueta leading by example. Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho were immense in midfield covering for the injured N’Golo Kante who started the game. At the back of defenders stood firm to deny Arsenal.

As I have posted in the last article stating what happened during the game, no one could have expected how well Chelsea would play and how bad are opponents were.  Chelsea ripped them apart and could have scored more than four goals.  Our back four and midfield complemented our attacking players and enabled them to express themselves going forward.  Make no mistake Chelsea were outstanding and arsenal had no answer.

There is plenty to be said this summer over the futures of our manager and some of the players.  If you add the turmoil that preceded this game giving Chelsea little chance, then you must sit back and take stock of just how well we played.

A man of the match performance from Eden Hazard on the night has given the Chelsea fans another night to remember in his final appearance for the club.  A tribute will be posted to hazard in due course.

It’s been 15 years since Roman Abramovich took over our club and Chelsea have won another trophy.  In all that time there has only ever been four seasons where we have won nothing it’s an outstanding record.

Chelsea have become the first side in Europa League history to finish the season unbeaten which again is testament to the players and the manager finishing the season on an unbelievable high.  Who would have thought it would have impossible two months ago.

2019-20 Champions League pots revealed: PSV & Ajax profit from Arsenal’s Europa League final loss

Impact of Arsenal’s Europa League final loss

Had Arsenal beaten Chelsea in the Europa League final, the Gunners would have been in pot 1 for the 2019-20 Champions League group phase.

After losing, Arsenal face another year of Europa League matches.

Moreover, Arsenal’s defeat to Chelsea has had far-reaching consequences for next year’s Champions League.

To begin with, Lyon have benefitted from Arsenal’s loss to Chelsea as the Ligue 1 side has now qualified for the Champions League group phase.

PSV & Ajax profit too

Ajax, who lost to Spurs in this season’s Champions League semi-final, won the Dutch title ahead of PSV.

As a result, Ajax will enter the 2019-20 Champions League in the third round of qualifiers.

Arsenal’s loss on Wednesday has also affected the Amsterdam giants as, provided they win their qualifier, Ajax will be placed in pot 2 for the Champions League group draw.

PSV have also benefited from Chelsea’s win.

Had the Blues lost to Arsenal, PSV would have started their Champions League qualifiers in round one.

Now PSV start their UCL campaign in round two, and the Dutch side know they’ll face either FC Basel or Olympiakos.

2019-20 Champions League pots

As revealed by ESPN, the 2019-20 Champions League pots are now almost finalised.

Chelsea have joined Man City in pot 1 for next season’s draw.

If Tottenham win the Champions League final on Saturday night, Spurs will also be in pot 1.

Alternatively, Liverpool will be in pot 1 if they triumph in Madrid.

As things stand today, the 4 pots for the 2019-20 Champions League are as follows (note – if a team is bold, that’s because their pot is guaranteed):

POT 1: Liverpool or Tottenham, Chelsea, Barcelona, Manchester City, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Zenit St Petersburg

POT 2 (provisional): Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, FC Porto*, Liverpool or Tottenham, Borussia Dortmund, Napoli, Shakhtar Donetsk, Ajax*

POT 3 (provisional)Benfica, Dynamo Kiev*, Lyon, Bayer Leverkusen, FC Salzburg, Valencia, Inter Milan, Celtic*

POT 4 (provisional)FC Copenhagen*, Dinamo Zagreb*, Lokomotiv Moscow, Genk, Galatasaray, RB Leipzig, Atalanta, Lille

*denotes must go through qualifying

Arsene Wenger didn’t dribble past Zinedine Zidane. Here’s video showing what actually happened.

Europa League Final – Chelsea 4-1 Arsenal – How the game unfolded.

Chelsea are Europa League champions! I have to say that despite having some sense of optimism that Chelsea could possibly deliver a performance ahead of the game, no-one could have dreamed to witness a second half display that literally blew Arsenal away.

Heading into the game last night we had major concerns with the players missing and had been sweating on the fitness of N’Golo Kante. In addition, the public show of frustration from Maurizio Sarri 24-hours before kick-off leading to extensive negative press had not helped and pre-match preparations. As I said in my Vlog posted last night ahead of the game, I was not confident at all.

The first thirty minutes of the game did not help calm any apprehension from the Chelsea fans. Arsenal came out the brighter and seemingly more confident of the two sides and dominated us. Chelsea were sitting deep but working hard without the ball and N’Golo Kante despite not being 100% had started the game. It was clear that Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic were asked to compensate, and both delivered in impressive style. Jorginho was winning tackles, Kovacic was everywhere and it was good to see.

On 17 minutes some sloppy play from us gave Lacazette an opportunity to get into the box. As he did, Kepa came out to challenge him and the French striker went down. To the naked eye it looked like a pen, but replays showed Kepa pulled away and Lacazette was looking for it. Granit Xhaka fired over the bar from distance around thirty minutes into the game clipping the top of the crossbar – Chelsea still had not got going at all.

Chelsea then grew into the game and started to impose their style on Arsenal. Eden Hazard was becoming more influential now and his pass forward to Jorginho who had run in-behind the Arsenal midfield opened the door. Jorginho just on the edge of the box laid the ball off to Olivier Giroud and his shot low toward the bottom corner was saved by the impressive Petr Cech. Half-time 0-0.

I mentioned on social media that we needed to see Chelsea start the second half much better than they did in the first half. None of us could have expected to see what happened in the next 18 minutes.
Chelsea started well and had plenty of possession inside Arsenal’s half. Just three minutes after the restart Emerson collects the ball in plenty of space and crosses the ball low into the box for Giroud to stoop down low and flick a header past Cech inside the near post to make it 1-0 Chelsea.

On 59 minutes, more Chelsea possession and the ball is worked wide to Hazard who looks up, spots Pedro making a run inside from the right, on the edge of the box unmarked and Hazard plays the ball for Pedro to strike it first time left-footed low into the bottom corner to make it 2-0 Chelsea.

Arsenal had little choice but to come out at us and by doing so, it was clear that Chelsea would be able to find even more space in attacking areas. After some good work from Kovacic driving forward into Arsenal’s box, the ball came out to Pedro on 63 minutes. He steps inside from right to left and slides a pass into the box to Giroud in space who is brought down with a tackle from behind, penalty awarded and Hazard scores to make it 3-0 Chelsea and game over!

To their credit, Arsenal kept going and scored a great goal from Iwobi the substitute on 68 minutes. A half-cleared corner comes out to him on the edge of the box and he hits it on the half volley giving Kepa no chance 3-1.

Just for a split second you think to yourself “don’t throw this away now Chelsea” but we did not have to worry. Just three minutes later the move of the game from us demonstrating the importance of Olivier Giroud to Chelsea in attack carved Arsenal open.

Eden Hazard drops deeps picks up the ball just inside the Arsenal half. He strides forward towards their box as Giroud makes a run to the left-hand corner of the box. Hazard steps to his right and then plays the ball across his body to Giroud who has dragged the defender with him. Giroud looks up and plays a first time cross over the Arsenal defence across goal, weighted perfectly, for Eden Hazard to walk onto it and slot home from close range to make it 4-1 to win it for us!

It was a breath-taking second half performance from us, led by Eden Hazard and Chelsea are Europa League Champions!

Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud made fun of Arsenal on Jorginho’s live Instagram video after the Europa League final

Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud scores vs Arsenal

Olivier Giroud broke the deadlock for Chelsea in the Europa League final against Arsenal in Baku.

Should Laurent Koscielny have done better?

Early in the second half, Giroud beat Koscielny to head a left-sided cross from Emerson past Petr Cech.

After planting his header in the net, Giroud stopped himself from over-celebrating against his former employer.

Giroud finished Chelsea’s Europa League campaign with eleven goals in the competition.

It’s also worth remembering that Giroud has agreed a contract extension to stay at Chelsea in 2019-20.

Three key talking points from Chelsea’s win over Arsenal.

Adidas & Maserati may help Juventus try to sign Man City’s Pep Guardiola if Maurizio Sarri’s move doesn’t happen

Maurizio Sarri & Juventus

The morning after Maurizio Sarri finally won the first major trophy of his career, Chelsea fans are waking up to a raft of reports linking their manager with Juventus.

Juventus, who won the Scudetto for an eighth-successive season in 2018-19, now need a new manager.

After five seasons in Turin, Max Allegri has left Juve this summer.

Rumours linking Sarri with the Bianconeri have been around for a while. And those rumours increased on Wednesday, hours before the Europa League final, when Juventus president Andrea Agnelli was pictured during a meeting with Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck.

For the record, Sarri has two years to run on his Chelsea contract.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport on Thursday, Agnelli and Buck were talking about Sarri’s possible switch this summer.

GdS claim Chelsea want 5.5 million euros for their coach.

La Stampa also believe that Agnelli and Buck were talking about Sarri’s possible transfer.

Moreover, it’s claimed Chelsea are open to Sarri leaving, while Wednesday’s meeting has “accelerated” the possibility of that happening.

What about Man City’s Pep Guardiola?

If Sarri doesn’t move to Juventus, who will be the new boss of the Italian champs?

Man City’s Pep Guardiola has also been mentioned as a possible Juve target this summer.

That’s despite the fact that Guardiola has categorically stated he’s not joining Juve in 2019.

On Thursday, it’s the turn of Italian daily Tuttosport to recycle the ‘Guardiola to Juve’ rumour.

Tuttosport note that while Sarri is the favourite for Juve, it’s still unclear whether the former Napoli manager will accept the position.

Accordingly, Juve are are preparing a plan B focusing on City’s Guardiola.

Indeed, Tuttosport suggest that Juventus are considering asking their sponsors like Adidas and Maserati to help fund their move for Guardiola.

But can Adidas and Maserati really turn Guardiola away from Man City? That seems unlikely.

Maurizio Sarri press conference after Chelsea beat Arsenal

So what did Sarri say about his Chelsea future after Chelsea beat Arsenal in the Europa League final?

The Italian indicated that he may stay at Stamford Bridge next season:

I have to speak to my club [about my future], the season only finished one hour ago, the owner or a director.  I deserve to stay as manager, but that is only my opinion and my opinion is not enough.

We have to speak, of course. We need to know what the club can do for me, what I can do better for the club. I need to speak to the club, but the club needs to speak to me. Maybe in a couple of days, but I have a contract here.

You know very well I love the Premier League, I love the competition and I’m lucky I’m at Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the best Championships in the world. I am happy, but I want to know what the club thinks and whether we can improve.

Arsenal vs Chelsea

The 2019 Europa League final is set to take place on Wednesday the 29th of May.

The tie will be played between two English sides, Arsenal and Chelsea.

The tie will obviously be of huge importance for both teams as it is a chance to win the second biggest prize in European club football.

However, the final will have slightly more importance to Arsenal as if they win the tie it will mean they can play Champions League football next season.

Gunners fans singing for Mkhitaryan

One of the biggest talking points heading into what should be an excellent final is the location.

The final is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital city.

The location is attracting a fair bit of attention and largely not for positive reasons.

Firstly, Arsenal and Chelsea fans were handed 6,000 tickets each for the final.

While this doesn’t seem like that many for two big PL clubs, Arsenal have had to return around 2,300 of their tickets due to many fans not wanting to make the over 5,000-mile round journey.

Some Arsenal fans have also been sharing their struggles in Baku involving problems with hotels and taxis.

Perhaps the biggest problem, however, was that Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan chose not to travel to Baku as he feared for his safety.

There is political tension between Mkhitaryan’s home country Armenia and Azerbaijan, which led to him opting to stay in London.

Arsenal fans wearing Mkhitaryan shirts in Baku have even been stopped by police.

Now, a video has emerged showing Arsenal fans in the capital chanting for their missing player.
