Fabinho opens up on ‘surprise’ at being omitted from Brazil’s Copa America squad

Liverpool midfielder Fabinho has this afternoon admitted to his surprise and disappointment at being left out of Brazil’s squad for this summer’s Copa America.

Selecao squad

The latest edition of the Copa America, which sees the finest national sides from South America pitted against one another, is set to take place in Brazil over the coming months.

The tournament will be spread across dates between the 14th of June and 7th of July, in 5 host cities.

Hosts Brazil are currently viewed as clear favourites to emerge victorious, with the Selecao’s star-studded 23-man squad having been announced 3 weeks ago.

The embarrassment of riches at the calling of manager Tite was highlighted by the fact that the likes of Marcelo, Douglas Costa, Lucas Moura and, perhaps most surprisingly, Fabinho were all omitted from his final panel:

Liverpool midfield general Fabinho enjoyed a stellar second-half to the campaign at Anfield, playing a crucial role in guiding Jurgen Klopp’s men to within a point of Premier League glory, and the final of the Champions League.

‘Kind of surprised’

As such, speaking this afternoon ahead of tomorrow night’s CL showpiece in Madrid, the Reds’ standout opened up on his disappointment at being the odd man out in the midfield plans of Tite:

‘I was following the call and hoped to be on the list. But as soon as the midfield passed and I saw that I was not in it, I was kind of surprised.’

‘The coach (Tite) made his decision, said he had good options. And really he has good options in midfield.’

‘He had to make a choice, leave one out and I was (the one) chosen to stay out.’
