Christian Eriksen equalled a David Beckham PL record vs Liverpool

Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen this evening equalled a long-standing Premier League record, during his side’s defeat at Liverpool.

Liverpool vs Tottenham

Spurs travelled to Anfield earlier today, for their first outing following the international break.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men headed into proceedings having picked up just a solitary point from their last 4 Premier League fixtures, a run which had seen the North Londoners fall off the blistering pace being set by Liverpool and Manchester City atop the English top-flight.

In fact, Tottenham’s dismal recent form had seen them dragged into a tightly-contested battle to maintain their spot in the top-4.

Liverpool snatch all 3 points

And, when all was said and done on Merseyside this evening, the struggles of the capital giants very much continued, as Liverpool emerged with a 2-1 win.

The Reds opened the game’s scoring with a quarter of an hour on the clock, when Andy Robertson’s pinpoint delivery from the left was nodded home by Roberto Firmino.

After an opening 45 minutes during which Liverpool largely dominated, Spurs came out the stronger following the interval, though, before pulling level through Lucas Moura 20 minutes from time.

But, just when it appeared as though the visitors were set to emerge with a point, a 90th-minute mistake from Hugo Lloris saw the unfortunate Toby Alderweireld put through his own net, handing all 3 points to Liverpool.

Eriksen matches Beckham

On the back of a heartbreaking result for Spurs, though, an impressive statistic surrounding the production of star midfielder Christien Eriksen has emerged online.

As showcased below, in setting up Lucas Moura for his side’s solitary goal at Anfield, the Danish international joined David Beckham as the only player to register 10 or more assists across 4 straight Premier League seasons:

Man United fans call for Thomas Meunier signing after PSG stopper likes IG post

Supporters of Manchester United have taken to social media in numbers over the last 24 hours to call for their side to move for PSG defender Thomas Meunier.

Man United 2-1 Watford

United welcomed Watford to Old Trafford yesterday afternoon, in their first outing following the international break.

The Red Devils headed into proceedings aware that a victory would see them reclaim their spot in the Premier League’s top-4, at least temporarily.

Since securing their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a stunning 2nd-leg turnaround versus PSG at the beginning of the month, though, the Manchester giants had since fallen to consecutive defeats at the hands of Arsenal and Wolves.

But, when all was said and done at Old Trafford yesterday, United got their season back on track, courtesy of a hard-fought 2-1 win.

Marcus Rashford opened the game’s scoring shortly before the half-hour mark, latching onto a pinpoint Luke Shaw through-ball to dink a superb finish over the advancing Ben Foster.

And, despite Watford having largely-dominated, particularly during the second-half, the home side went on to bag a 2nd twenty minutes from time, when Anthony Martial slotted home following a scrappy sequence in the Watford box.

Abdoulaye Doucoure did manage to pull one back for the visitors in the 90th-minute, but it eventually proved little more than a consolation, as United emerged with all 3 points.

‘A great fit’

On the back of their side’s latest win, the Red Devils took to Instagram to post a celebratory image to their story last night.

And, in a move which has since seen him draw the ire of his side’s fans, PSG defender Thomas Meunier quickly liked United’s post, as showcased below:

French giants PSG were of course only ousted from the Champions League by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men 3 weeks ago.

Meunier, though, a self-proclaimed Man United fan, seemingly overlooked this fact amid his latest social media activity, a move which has since seen droves of Red Devils’ fans call for the board at Old Trafford to swoop for the Belgian stopper this summer:

Tottenham fans take aim at Hugo Lloris after Liverpool

Liverpool vs Tottenham

Liverpool and Tottenham went head-to-head in Sunday’s late kick-off.

After Man City beat Fulham 2-0 on Saturday, Liverpool had to pick up all three points vs Spurs if they wanted to return to the summit of the Premier League.

Tottenham, on the other hand, started the day in 3rd place but just one point away from 5th place Arsenal who play Newcastle on Monday.

Spurs had also failed to win any of their last four league games before Sunday’s clash.

Lloris’ blunder vs Liverpool

The first 45 was pretty poor from a Tottenham perspective with Liverpool dominating much of the half.

Liverpool’s dominance was eventually rewarded in the 16th minute as Roberto Firmino put them 1-0 up.

The second half saw the two sides roles very much reversed though with Tottenham looking the much brighter side.

Tottenham would eventually break down the Liverpool defence in the 70th minute through a Lucas strike.

However, in the build-up to the goal, it looked as though Harry Kane took a free-kick while the ball was moving.

Spurs were unable to hang on for a point though.

Mohamed Salah headed towards goal in injury time and Hugo Lloris parried it down to Toby Alderweireld who scored an own goal.

Lloris really should have done better though and as a result, he is being slated on social media.

Maurizio Sarri responds to ‘f*ck sarri-ball’ chants vs Cardiff

Chelsea lucky to beat Cardiff

Chelsea travelled to Wales on Sunday to take on 18th place Cardiff.

Cardiff started the day five points from safety and a win vs the Blues would have been huge for Neil Warnock’s side.

The game would finish 2-1 to Chelsea but Cardiff should feel very hard done by.

The Blue Birds took the lead in the 46th minute via Victor Camarasa.

Cardiff then had a huge penalty shout turned down shortly after.

Chelsea would eventually equalise in the 84th minute thanks to Cesar Azpilicueta, although the Spaniard was about three yards offside.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek would then rescue all three points for Chelsea in injury time.

Sarri on chants

After going 1-0 down vs a relegation-battling side, Chelsea fans once again took aim at Maurizio Sarri.

The predominate chant sung by the travelling fans was ‘f*ck sarri-ball’, a reference to Sarri’s style of play.

Sarri has since responded to the chants in his post-match press conference:

“I don’t want to answer because I can understand very well. I have been on the pitch for the last 45 years.

“I was really disappointed for my players because they were fighting. Maybe it was better to wait until the end of the match. I can understand.

“Unfortunately I am getting used to this. I need to work in order to change their opinion.”As quoted by football.london.

Chelsea fans take aim at Maurizio Sarri with chants at Cardiff

The travelling Chelsea supporters who made their way to the Cardiff City Stadium this afternoon have widely-targeted manager Maurizio Sarri.

Cardiff vs Chelsea

Sarri’s men travelled to Wales for their first Premier League outing following the international break.

The matchup marked a crucial one in both the race for a spot in the English top-flight’s top-4, and the battle to avoid relegation to the Championship.

Ahead of kick-off, Chelsea sat in 6th in the Premier League table, 4 points adrift of joint-3rd-place holders Tottenham and Manchester United.

Cardiff, meanwhile, occupied the final of the relegation spots, with the victories picked up by both Burnley and Southampton yesterday afternoon having heaped further pressure on Neil Warnock’s men to pick up a positive result this afternoon.

Cardiff in front

As things stand, though, the Bluebirds are well on their way to a surprise 3-point haul.

Deep into the second-half at the Cardiff City Stadium, the hosts hold a 1-0 lead, courtesy of Victor Camarasa’s superb strike shortly after the interval.

Sarri slated

As such, amid the latest in a host of disappointing performances on the part of visitors Chelsea, Maurizio Sarri has unsurprisingly been singled out for heavy criticism from the Blues’ faithful.

After the Italian tactician opted to leave all of N’Golo Kante, Eden Hazard and Callum Hudson-Odoi out of his starting XI in Wales, large sections of the travelling Chelsea support since made abundantly clear the fact that they are at their wits’ end with their side’s boss, courtesy of a number of abusive chants:

Why Eden Hazard & N’Golo Kante were benched vs Cardiff City

Cardiff vs Chelsea

The opening game in the Premier League on Sunday saw Cardiff take on Chelsea.

Both sides were in need of the points for different reasons.

Can Cardiff beat the drop? The Bluebirds remain in the bottom three despite a recent upturn in form.

Can Chelsea finish in the top four? The Blues started the weekend in sixth spot in the league.

Shock Chelsea team news

When the teams were announced before Sunday’s game, there were plenty of raised eyebrows.

The respective line-ups were as follows:

Cardiff City XI: Etheridge, Peltier, Morrison, Ecuele Manga, Bennett, Gunnarsson, Josh Murphy, Victor Camarasa, Arter, Hoilett, Niasse

Subs: Ralls, Zohore, Reid, Bacuna, Mendez-Laing, Harris, Brian Murphy

Chelsea XI: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Alonso, Kovacic, Jorginho, Barkley, Pedro, Higuain, Willian

Subs: Kante, Hazard, Loftus-Cheek, Caballero, Giroud, Hudson-Odoi, Christensen

Why Eden Hazard & N’Golo Kante were benched

Neither Eden Hazard nor N’Golo Kante were in the Chelsea XI. Why?

For the record, this is the first time Kante hasn’t started for the Blues this season.

Moreover, while both Hazard and Kante were in international action during the break, neither player suffered an injury.

With that being the case, the only assumption is that Hazard and Kante were left out by Maurizio Sarri for tactical reasons.

Also of note was Callum Hudson-Odoi on the bench.

The teenager, who has yet to start a Premier League game for Chelsea, started for England during the break.

When asked about his XI before the game, Sarri said:

At the moment, Kante has played 50 matches this season and Hazard 47. They both played with the national team, Hazard for 187 minutes and Kante for 175 minutes and so I think that it’s time to rest.

How Celtic’s Scott Brown triggered Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos into getting sent off

Celtic vs Rangers

The big match in Scotland on Sunday was the Old Firm derby.

Celtic went into the game in first place, while Rangers were second.

Three points for Celtic would hammer a significant nail into Rangers’ title winning coffin.

And the first half went the way of the Bhoys as they scored while Rangers were reduced to ten men.

Scott Brown vs Alfredo Morelos

Odsonne Edouard broke the deadlock for Celtic midway through the first half.

Neil Lennon’s side then received a major boost when Rangers forward Alfredo Morelos was sent off in the 31st minute.

Morelos was dismissed for throwing an elbow at Scott Brown in an off the ball incident.

What the match official didn’t see, however, was how Scott Brown provoked the situation.

Behind the ref’s back, the Celtic midfielder tripped up Morelos as they moved up the pitch.

To be clear, Brown’s trip was intentional and spiteful.

However Morelos stupidly took the bait and lost it.

Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic injury update vs Watford

Aleksandar Mitrovic injury update vs Watford

Serbian international Aleksandar Mitrovic was out of action for Fulham on Saturday against Man City.

Mitrovic wasn’t even on the bench yesterday.

Mitrovic has been away with his national team during the international break.

He played 10 minutes in a friendly against Germany, and 90 minutes in a Euro 2020 qualifier against Portugal.

Next up for relegation-threatened Fulham is a trip to Watford in midweek.

It’s looking likely that Mitrovic could miss the Watford game too. Scott Parker has revealed:

Mitro has been struggling with a slight problem for the last couple of weeks. Coming back from international duty and he’s not ready to play today.

We’re looking to get him some treatment and take it day by day with Mitro at the moment to see where we are come Tuesday, and longer term we’ll look at that and see how it goes.

Fulham dead certs for relegation

Huddersfield were relegated from the Premier League on Saturday at Crystal Palace.

Fulham, with only 17 points from 32 games, as all-but certain to go down with the Terriers.

Man City beat the Cottagers 2-0 over the weekend. Goals from Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero in the first half lift City above Liverpool into first place.

As for Watford, they lost 2-1 at Man United on Saturday.

The Hornets put in a positive performance at Old Trafford. But will Watford have one eye on the FA Cup semifinal against Wolves when they take on Fulham in a few days time?

Good for Liverpool: Porto’s Alex Telles suffers freak penalty injury

Liverpool vs Porto

Could Liverpool end up winning a historic double this season?

While most have been focused on Man City’s chances at winning the quadruple, Liverpool could end the season on a massive high.

The Reds could edge out the Sky Blues to claim their first league title in 29 years.

In Europe, after being last season’s Champions League runners-up, Liverpool could go one step further to win the competition.

Liverpool have been drawn against FC Porto in the quarterfinals of the UCL.

Porto’s Alex Telles suffers freak penalty injury

Porto are joint top of the Portuguese top flight, behind Benfica on goal difference.

On Saturday the Dragons picked up a crucial away win at Braga.

Porto won the match 3-2 on the road to seal their fourth win on the bounce.

Braga lead Porto 2-1 at the start of the second half. However two penalties, first from Alex Telles and then from Tiquinho, turned the match in Porto’s favour.

However Alex Telles managed to injure himself in a freak incident when he took his spot-kick.

Chelsea’s Gonzalo Higuain & Ross Barkley criticised before Cardiff

Cardiff vs Chelsea

Sunday’s opening match in the Premier League is in Wales as Cardiff take on Chelsea.

Can Cardiff beat the drop?

Huddersfield’s relegation was confirmed on Saturday, while Fulham seem dead-certs to go down too.

Cardiff are third bottom of the league. The Bluebirds are five points behind Brighton, Southampton and Burnley.

As for Chelsea, can the Blues finish in the top four?

Sitting sixth in the table, Chelsea are three points behind Arsenal and four points behind Tottenham and Man United.

Gonzalo Higuain & Ross Barkley

What is it with Maurizio Sarri and how he calls out his players in public?

Throughout the season Sarri has shown a willingness to criticise his team to the media.

He’s often wondered whether Chelsea’s players have the right mentality to succeed.

Prior to the Cardiff game, Sarri has issued more eyebrow raising statements about Gonzalo Higuain and Ross Barkley.

Higuain’s problems in the Premier League

Starting with Higuain, the Argentine has been told to improve by his manager:

I would like to see him at the top in the last two months. At the moment, only this is really important. We need Gonzalo at the top. It is not easy, I think, to get used to this championship.

The level is different. The way of playing is different. I think especially for a striker it is very difficult to get used to the Premier League in just one or two months. He said to me that it is difficult because the physical impact of the defenders here is really very strong.

The referees here are really very different than in Italy, and so it is another football for him and especially for a striker or goalkeeper. It is really very different, so he needs time, but we have no time. We need him to get to his top level in these last two months.

For the record, Higuain is only under contract at Chelsea until the end of the season.

Ross Barkley & centre-mid

Ross Barkley had a positive international break with England.

He starred against Montenegro in a Euro 2020 qualifier playing in a central role.

So could Barkley be Chelsea’s centre-mid? Sarri doubted that, saying:

Probably he is not a leader in that way. He is not able to lead the other players.

He is a fighter. He is able to fight in every match. I think it is a question of personality. Sometimes you have a very young player with a very high level of personality.
