Crystal Palace handed double injury boost ahead of Southampton

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has this afternoon provided updates on the fitness of goalkeepers Vicente Guaita and Wayne Hennessey.

Southampton vs Crystal Palace

The Eagles are set to travel to St. Mary’s to take on Southampton tomorrow night, in a Premier League clash.

Palace head into proceedings full of confidence, on the back of a morale-boosting victory last time out.

The capital outfit put fellow Londoners Tottenham to the sword by 2 goals to nil on Sunday evening, to secure their place in the 5th-round of the FA Cup.

3 losses from their last 4 in the Premier League, though, have seen Palace slip to just 3 points clear of the relegation zone.

As such, a positive result versus fellow relegation candidates Southampton will no doubt be viewed as crucial for the Eagles ahead of kick-off.

Palace’s goalkeeper conundrum

And the hopes of tomorrow night’s visitors have today been boosted, by the return of a pair of players to fitness.

As confirmed by Roy Hodgson in a press conference this afternoon, goalkeepers Vicente Guaita and Wayne Hennessey have recovered from their respective injuries, and are available for selection at St. Mary’s:

Hodgson also provided a brief update on both Connor Wickham and Christian Benteke, after the former notched Palace’s opener on his return to the starting lineup versus Tottenham on Sunday, and the latter impressed in a short cameo off the bench at Selhurst Park:

Jurgen Klopp provides update on Virgil van Dijk ahead of Leicester City

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Virgil van Dijk trained ahead of the club’s clash with Leicester City.

The defender was a doubt after struggling with an illness but was able to train on Monday.

The Foxes arrive at Anfield on Wednesday looking to become the first side to win at the home of the league leaders this season.

Klopp: “Virgil was ill but trained yesterday”

Klopp’s side will be looking to keep the pressure on Manchester City by claiming three points tomorrow.

They will be desperate to try and do so with van Dijk who is currently a doubt for the fixture.

Van Dijk has played every single minute of Premier League action for the Reds this term.

However, whilst away with the Merseyside club in Dubai, he picked up an illness.

The illness looked as though it would prevent the 27-year-old from playing against Leicester.

Fortunately for Liverpool, the outcome looks set to be positive with the defender returning to training on Monday.

Klopp said:

“He was a little bit ill but he trained yesterday – so we will see.”

PSG’s hopes of finally claiming Europe’s most prestigious prize are set to be dealt a huge blow.

The French champions could be without their talisman for the rest of the season if he undergoes surgery.

This means Neymar is 90% likely to require an operation, report L’Equipe.

PSG are now expected to face the prospect of taking on Ole Gunnar Soleskjaer’s in-form United side without the forward.

Neymar has netted 18 goals this season, as many as Edinson Cavani, and only bettered by Kylian Mbappe at PSG.

Liverpool’s Origi & Chelsea’s Giroud linked with possible Molineux moves

Wolves, Liverpool’s Origi & Chelsea’s Giroud

Tim Nash, who is a former Wolves correspondent for the Express & Star, has reported on Tuesday that Nuno Espirito Santo wants a new striker at Molineux.

Wolves are looking at the loan market.

Two players on the club’s radar are Liverpool’s Divock Origi and Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud.

On Origi, who has already had a say in Liverpool’s season scoring the winner against Everton, it’s said Wolves “retain an interest”.

Wolves also have “admiration” for World Cup winner Giroud.

Giroud is unlikely to be a starter for Chelsea in the remainder of the season after Gonzalo Higuain’s arrival.

For the record, both Origi and Giroud are out of contract at their respective clubs this summer.

Giroud on his Chelsea future

Last weekend Giroud spoke on French TV to Canal Football Club about his Chelsea future:

If the club decides to get another striker, like Higuain, it will certainly darken my future at Chelsea.

I’ve never said ‘no’ to a return to France. Lyon and Marseille are two great clubs. My priority is to stay in the Premier League though.

So would Giroud be keen on a switch to Molineux?

Wolves’ attacking stats

Wolves are eighth in the Premier League with 32 points. However Nuno’s side have a -4 goal difference.

Wolves have only scored 27 goals all season.

Chelsea & Man City

Memphis was happy to name six clubs he’d be pleased to play for.

The former Manchester United player picked Manchester City as one avenue. Chelsea were the other Premier League outfit named:

I want to go to a club like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich.

I want to go to a city that suits me and a club that suits me, to a team that really wants to play football.

I always talk about Real Madrid, a royal club, white shirts with gold. But I’m focused right now on Lyon, and then we see where I end up.

For the record, 24-year-old Memphis is under contract at Lyon until 2021.

Memphis Depay & Man United

Memphis Depay joined Man United in 2015 from PSV.

The Red Devils paid 25 million pounds for the attacking midfielder.

Depay spent three seasons at Old Trafford. his return was just seven goals in 53 appearances for United.

Lyon bought Memphis for £16m as United suffered a loss to get him off their books.

Good for Chelsea: Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson has an injury problem

Bournemouth vs Chelsea

Bournemouth welcome Chelsea to the Vitality Stadium on Wednesday night in the Premier League.

It’s been a decent few days for Chelsea in cup competitions.

Last weekend the Blues beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 to book their spot in the FA Cup fifth round.

Chelsea will take on Man United at Stamford Bridge in the next round of the FA Cup.

The win against the Owls came after Chelsea beat Tottenham on penalties to progress through to the Carabao Cup final.

Man City will take on the Pensioners in the showpiece.

Callum Wilson has an injury problem

On Tuesday, Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe faced the press before the Chelsea match.

In bad news for the Cherries, Howe confirmed that star forward Callum Wilson may miss the match against the Blues.

Howe has confirmed that Wilson has a knee problem and he’s a doubt for the midweek clash.

Chris Mepham & Dom Solanke

Bournemouth have been one of the more active Premier League sides in the January transfer market.

21-year-old defender Chris Mepham has joined the Cherries from Brentford. Mepham could make his debut for Bournemouth tomorrow night.

Dom Solanke has also moved to the south coast in January. The England attacker moved from Liverpool earlier in the month.

Solanke is still on the sidelines with injury, and he isn’t expected to make his Bournemouth bow until February.

Chelsea try to sign Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic

The front page of Spanish daily Sport has a big transfer story on Tuesday: Chelsea are trying to sign Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic.

Sport’s splash makes it clear that Chelsea are targeting Rakitic in the summer.

Will Barcelona be open to selling the Croatian midfielder?

Sport note one their front page that Rakitic’s intention is to stay at Barcelona.

Sport use a quote from Rakitic in which he said “I’d like to renew with Barca, and stay with the club for many years to come.”

Ivan Rakitic’s Barcelona contract

Now 30, Ivan Rakitic is under contract at the Camp Nou until 2021.

Rakitic has been at Barcelona since 2014, when he joined the Catalans from Sevilla.

Rakitic is a key member of Barcelona’s squad and a regular feature in midfield.

He’s scored two goals and chipped in with one assist in 20 La Liga matches this season.

He’s also played six times in the Champions League (1 goals, 2 assist), plus three times in the Copa del Rey.

Frenkie de Jong

Yet Rakitic may have a problem getting into the Barcelona team next season.

That’s after Barcelona signed Frenkie de Jong from Ajax last week.

The Dutch youngster cost the Catalans £75 million, while De Jong will move to Spain in the summer.

Barcelona have to sell

There have been reports that Barcelona’s de Jong signing pushed the Catalans into a corner.

Last week Spanish daily AS claimed that Barcelona have to sell two players from the following three this summer to balance their books: Rakitic, Philippe Coutinho and Samuel Umtiti.

Pep Guardiola gives Man City injury update before Newcastle

Newcastle vs Manchester City

Manchester City travel to Newcastle United on Tuesday evening.

City head into the game 2nd in the Premier League and four points off league leaders, Liverpool.

After facing Newcastle, Man City have a tough run of fixtures that starts with league games vs Arsenal and Chelsea.

Chelsea have already beaten City in the Premier League this season. So, Pep Guardiola will be well aware of the threat they pose.

Given City could well drop points vs Chelsea or Arsenal, a win vs Newcastle is a must.

Newcastle head into Tuesday’s game 17th in the league just two points above the relegation zone.

The Magpies are also expected to be without three of their top midfielders for the City game.

Rafa Benitez gave this update on Newcastle’s injuries:

“The midfielders are very close, but not ready for this game so it’s more or less the same [squad].”

Man City injury update

City boss Pep Guardiola has also provided an injury update on his own squad.

Benjamin Mendy has been out of action for much of the season with a knee injury.

The full-back would return in the second leg of City’s League Cup tie with Burton, managing 27 minutes.

However, Mendy would have a small reaction after playing vs Burton but Guardiola has now confirmed he is much better.

Vincent Kompany has also missed Man City’s last two league games and is expected to remain on the sidelines vs Newcastle.

Chelsea fans react to Alvaro Morata departing the club for Atletico Madrid

Supporters of Chelsea have flooded to Twitter this evening to respond to the news of Alvaro Morata’s transfer to La Liga giants Atletico Madrid being made official.

Morata’s Chelsea career

Morata made the move to Stamford Bridge from Real Madrid in the summer of 2017, after being deemed surplus to requirements in the Spanish capital for the second time in his career.

Chelsea splashed out a club-record fee with the potential to rise to £70 million to secure Morata’s signature, but the 26-year-old’s time in London since proved far from straightforward.

To Morata’s credit, his career in England actually started out in hugely-impressive fashion. The striker took to the Premier League like a duck to water, racking up 7 goals in his first 7 appearances.

However, the second-half of his debut campaign proved a far more testing affair. All told, between January and the end of the season, the Spaniard managed a paltry 3 goals.

Sevilla bound?

And Morata’s difficulties since carried over into the first-half of the current season. Although the former Juventus man notched 9 goals across all competitions, his finishing and general link-up play left a lot to be desired, leading to Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri often opting for Eden Hazard as a false 9 of late, relegating Morata to the bench.

Morata joins Atletico

As such, rumours had been rampant since the opening of the January transfer window that the Spanish international would be allowed to depart Stamford Bridge this month.

La Liga giants Atletico Madrid emerged as the leading contenders for the 26-year-old over the last couple of weeks, with Gonzalo Higuain’s arrival at Stamford Bridge last Wednesday having opened the path for Morata’s exit.

And Morata’s move to Atletico, where he spent 4 years during his youth career, has this evening subsequently been made official, with the Spaniard having joined Los Colchoneros on an 18-month loan deal:

‘Don’t come back’

And Chelsea’s fans have since taken to Twitter in numbers to react to news of Morata’s departure, with the majority having expressed their delight at the struggling hitman’s transfer:

Others, on the other hand, were keen to thank Morata for his efforts whilst in London, before wishing him luck for the future:

Odds slashed on Ivan Perisic to Arsenal & Mesut Ozil to Inter

Betting syndicate Ladbrokes have this afternoon provided updated odds on the possibility of Ivan Perisic joining Arsenal, and Mesut Ozil heading in the opposite direction to Inter Milan.

Arsenal’s hunt for reinforcements

Premier League outfit Arsenal have been one of, if not the most talked about club in Europe since the opening the January transfer market this month.

The Gunners have been linked with a whole host of players over the last 4 weeks, with Unai Emery keen to reinforce his squad ahead of a push for a place in the English top-flight’s top-4 over the second-half of the season.

The likes of James Rodriguez, Denis Suarez and Yannick Carrasco have all been hotly-tipped for a move to the Emirates, but, to this point, Arsenal have been left frustrated in their attempts to clinch their first January signing.

Perisic links

The latest player to have seen his name heavily-linked with a North London switch, meanwhile, has been Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic.

The Gunners’ first approach for Croatian wide-man Perisic was rumoured to have been firmly knocked back by Inter Milan, but subsequent reports throughout Europe earlier today have since suggested that the player himself has agreed terms with Arsenal, and that the two clubs are continuing to work towards a deal:

Perisic and Ozil to swap clubs?

Meanwhile, another player to have been touted as part of a potential transfer between Arsenal and Inter this month has been Mesut Ozil.

The German midfielder has endured a difficult spell under new Gunners’ boss Unai Emery to this point in the campaign, with Inter rumoured to be keen on his signature.

As such, betting syndicate Ladbrokes have this evening provided updated odds on the possibility of Ozil heading to the San Siro, and Perisic clinching a move to the Emirates.

And if the odds are anything to go by, then both transfers look to be inching closer to completion.

The possibility of Ozil swapping the Premier League for Serie A has been slashed from 7/1 to 7/2

Perisic’s touted move to England, meanwhile, currently sits at evens:
