Arsenal Boss Happy As Young Gunners Star In Europe

Arsenal head coach Unai Emery praised the performances of his young players as the Gunners opened their Europa League campaign with a win at 10-man Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Gunners boss made seven changes to the side who were held to a disappointing draw at Watford – and they paid off as the visitors ran out 3-0 victors at the Commerzbank Arena.

Joe Willock and Bukayo Saka both got on the scoresheet, the later also claiming all three assists as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang wrapped up the result at the death.

Both sides wasted a host of chances in an end-to-end contest as Frankfurt suffered their first European home defeat since 2006 – the late sending off of midfielder Dominik Kohr only adding to the disappointment.

But for Emery, it was vindication he has shown in Arsenal’s academy products since walking through the door at the Emirates Stadium, and the Spaniard was delighted with both Willock and Saka – as well as Emile Smith Rowe.

‘Their performance tonight was good and they deserve it,’ he said.

‘Maybe with his (Saka’s) goal, with his performance, but also in the match taking confidence, finishing really strongly physically.

‘And also with Emile, after his injury tonight he played for the first time this season and he worked well. Willock also, progressively he was feeling better and with a good performance.’

Aston Villa are next up for Arsenal when the newly-promoted side travel to north London on Sunday.

The Arsenal starting line-up is likely to revert back to something similar to the Watford game but Emery revealed two injured players are stepping up their return.

Kieran Tierney is yet to play for the club since arriving from Celtic this summer due to a groin problem, while Hector Bellerin has been missing for nine months with a serious knee injury.

‘Rob Holding is very close to us and tomorrow Kieran Tierney and Hector Bellerin are going to play in the under-23s,’ Emery said, with Holding part of the travelling party to Frankfurt having overcome his own knee problem.

Shkodran Mustafi still open to leaving Arsenal in January

Mustafi still looking to leave?

Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi has admitted he is still open to leaving the Gunners after failing to find a move in the summer transfer window.

Mustafi has become somewhat of a bit-part player at Arsenal over the past two months.

The German was once Arsenal’s number one centre-back, but performances have left him down the pecking order after the arrivals of David Luiz in the summer and Sokratis Papastathopoulos last year.

Despite featuring in 31 Premier League games last season, Mustafi is yet to feature for Arsenal in the English top-flight during the current campaign.

Emery even suggested during the summer that the player should leave for a new challenge.

Mustafi only made his first appearance in all competitions this season on Thursday night against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Now, Mustafi has been speaking about his future and it looks as though he still has one eye on the exit.

‘If something turns out, I’m open to taking the next step’

Speaking after the game on Thursday, Mustafi claimed that he’s still open to leaving the club ‘if something turns out’.

However, if nothing comes to fruition, he’s happy to continue with his football.

‘My dad talked to the club. I am a player of Arsenal and have another two years of contract,’ Mustafi explained, as quoted by the Mail.

‘I was never the one who starts a war when something does not work out.

‘If something turns out, I’m open to taking the next step. If not, then I will continue my football.

‘The coach told me that he sees me the same way as any player in the team. That’s why I played today.

‘If at some point a club from Germany has interest and it fits, I’m open for it.’

Manchester United open contract talks with Angel Gomes amid Barcelona interest

Man United looking to tie down talented youngster

Manchester United have reportedly opened contract talks with young midfielder Angel Gomes amid interest from La Liga giants Barcelona.

Gomes is arguably one of Man United’s most exciting talents and is quickly making a name for himself at Old Trafford.

The English midfielder has been at the Red Devils since the age of six.

Gomes scored six goals and assisted five in the Premier League’s youth league last campaign.

That saw him feature for the first team at times late last season.

While he’s yet to make a Premier League appearance this season, Gomes was one of several young talents who were given the chance to impress in the Europa League clash with FC Astana on Thursday.

Now, after breaking into the first team again, Man United are looking to reward him.

Barcelona interest the catalyst?

According to the MEN, Manchester United have opened contract talks with Gomes.

It’s said that club officials are ‘eager’ to tie him down to a new deal, with his current contract set to expire next summer.

Interestingly, the MEN also report that Gomes has generated interest from Barcelona.

They claim: ‘The MEN understands United are not currently close to a breakthrough with Gomes’s representatives and the England youth international has generated interest from Barcelona’.

Talks with Gomes could then be a result of fears that Barcelona could poach the youngster.

The MEN also make a point to mention Gomes is close friends with Jadon Sancho and could be ’emboldened’ by his success abroad.

Pep Guardiola asks Riyad Mahrez to be more relaxed over playing time

Should Mahrez be playing regularly?

Pep Guardiola has suggested that Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez has to be calmer when not featuring in the first team.

Mahrez has had somewhat of an up and down start to his Manchester City career.

While he’s been brilliant at times, he hasn’t exactly been a first-team regular at the Etihad.

Players such as Bernardo Silva, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane have seen him have to settle for the bench at times.

Now, with the player impressing during City’s Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk, Pep Guardiola has been speaking about the Algerian.

‘Perhaps the only thing he has to improve is to be more relaxed when he doesn’t play’

Speaking after the game against Shakhtar, Guardiola praised Mahrez’s quality and competitive mentality.

Though, he did suggest that Mahrez needs to improve his ability to remain relaxed after being selected for the bench.

‘He loves to play football – he loves to be in contact with the ball,’ Guardiola explained, as quoted by the Mail.

‘Take the ball and have fun with the ball. Maybe it’s a stupid detail but I like it.

‘He’s quality. Perhaps the only thing he has to improve is to be more relaxed when he doesn’t play. Only that. The rest is top.

‘When he played last season he played good, except the first few games maybe but it’s normal.

‘There is no doubt we need the quality and especially the mentality. Especially how competitive he is surprised me a lot.’

Wolves in advanced talks over new Joao Moutinho deal – Telegraph

A big boost for Wolves

Wolves are reportedly in advanced talks with midfielder Joao Moutinho over a new contract at Molineux, following his brilliant performances since joining.

Moutinho joined Wolves after their promotion to the Premier League last year.

After some time at Monaco, the Portuguese star joined up with several of his compatriots to form a new-look Wolves side, equipped to take on the Premier League.

Safe to say, his move was a resounding success after a brilliant season for both Moutinho and Wolves.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s side managed to finish seventh in their first season back in the Premier League.

That even brought with it a spot in the Europa League.

It was an impressive individual season for Moutinho too, who was named Wolves’ player of the season, scoring one goal and assisting eight.

Now, he looks set to sign a new contract at Wolves.

Moutinho could sign new deal ‘in the next ten days’

According to the Telegraph, Wolves are in advanced talks with Moutinho over a new deal.

They claim: ‘Moutinho is in line for a two-year extension as Nuno Espirito Santo moves to keep the influential Portugal international at Molineux for the long-term, in a development which will lift some of the gloom over Wolves’s disappointing start to the season.’

It’s then suggested that a deal is actually quite close to being concluded.

The Telegraph claim a deal could even be done ‘in the next ten days’.

Safe to say, this would be a big boost for Wolves after what has been a poor start to the campaign.

Arsenal & Man United youngsters named in Europa League Team of the Week

UEFA’s Europa League Team of the Week has been announced this afternoon, with a quartet of Premier League representatives.

EL returns

The opening round of the latest edition of European football’s 2nd-tier club competition got underway last night.

It proved a largely positive night in terms of UK representation, with all of Arsenal, Manchester United and Rangers having picked up wins, and Celtic having secured a noteworthy 1-1 draw at Rennes.

The early-season struggles of Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves continued, though, as the West Midlands outfit fell to a 1-0 home defeat to Portuguese outfit Braga.

Elsewhere, the likes of Sevilla, Roma and Basel picked up comfortable victories, while there were shocks for Lazio and Borussia Monchengladbach.

Saka and Tuanzebe make the cut

As such, on the back of an action-packed, goal-filled night of Europa League football, the Team of the Week for the opening round of fixtures has today been announced.

There are spots for a trio of Arsenal stars, with all of Emiliano Martinez, Calum Chambers and Man of the Match Bukayo Saka included, on the back of their respective performances versus Eintracht Frankfurt.

The final Premier League representative comes in the form of Axel Tuanzebe, following the young stopper’s dominant showing in Manchester United’s 1-0 victory over Astana:

The Europa League Player of the Week, meanwhile, is Ludogorets’ Claudiu Keșerü, after the Romanian netted a hat-trick versus CSKA Moscow:

Marco Silva provides Andre Gomes injury update before Sheffield United

Andre Gomes injury update from Silva

Everton boss Marco Silva has given an injury update on midfielder Andre Gomes ahead of their clash with Sheffield United.

Gomes has been instrumental since signing for Everton initially on loan last season.

The Portugese midfielder became a pivotal part of Marco Silva’s side and that convinced the Toffees to sign him permanently during the summer.

Though, his campaign hasn’t got off to the best of starts.

Gomes suffered an injury during the 3-2 win over Wolves at Goodison Park before the international break.

That ruled the midfielder out of Everton’s 3-1 loss to Bournemouth.

Now, ahead of Everton’s clash with Sheffield United at Goodison this weekend, Marco Silva has given an update on Gomes.

Gomes out for Sheffield United clash

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Silva revealed that Gomes is not fit to play this weekend.

Though, he is feeling better and the club will monitor him on a day-by-day basis ahead of their League Cup meeting with Sheffield Wednesday next week.

“Andre Gomes is out and JP Gbamin is out as well,” Silva explained to the press, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

“It’s the type of situation we have to see day-by-day. He’s getting better, but he’s not in full training with the team.

“If he’s feeling better he’ll start to take the next step, but we have to look at him day-by-day to get him in the best condition possible.

“We have to see in two or three days and after that I can give more information to you.”

Man United blow: Trio, including Paul Pogba, ruled out of West Ham trip/Daniel James also in doubt

Updates on the fitness of a number of Manchester United stars have emerged online this afternoon, ahead of their meeting with West Ham United.

West Ham vs Man United

The Red Devils are set to travel to the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon, for their latest Premier League outing.

United head into proceedings having put a disappointing streak of no wins in 3 firmly behind them over the last week.

First off, a solitary Marcus Rashford strike saw the Manchester giants put Leicester City to the sword at Old Trafford last weekend.

And one goal again proved enough for United in their Europa League curtain-raiser last night, with youngster Mason Greenwood having been the player on the scoresheet versus Kazakh outfit Astana.

West Ham, meanwhile, are currently enjoying a solid run of form of their own.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men are unbeaten in 5 across all competitions, including 3-1 and 2-0 Premier League wins over Watford and Norwich respectively.

United’s sidelined stars

And the Hammers’ hopes of carrying their solid early-season form beyond this weekend’s fixtures have today been boosted, by updates on the fitness of a number of Manchester United’s key performers.

Speaking on the back of his side’s victory over Astana last night, Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was questioned on the status of Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw, all of whom have been sidelined of late.

Solskjaer, though, in a blow for his side, confirmed that the trio are set to miss out this weekend:

‘Not really, no. They’ve not been training yet so I don’t think so.’

On the potential involvement of the in-form Daniel James at the London Stadium, the Norwegian tactician continued:

‘Daniel James? I don’t know. He’s not trained in the last few days. Hopefully, but not sure. We’ll have a recovery day with everyone tomorrow and we’ll see on Saturday.’

Direct contributions to all 3 goals vs Eintracht: Arsenal have a gem on their hands in Bukayo Saka

Arsenal secured a thoroughly-impressive 3-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt this evening, with one Gunners youngster in particular having since been singled out for special praise.

Arsenal stand tall

Unai Emery’s men travelled to Germany a short time ago, for their Europa League opener.

Arsenal headed into proceedings hoping for a bounce-back performance, with the capital giants’ positive early-season form having deserted them of late.

The north Londoners were without a win in any of their last 3 domestic outings, the latest of which saw Arsenal throw away a 2-goal lead to eventually escape with a 2-2 draw at Watford last weekend.

When all was said and done at the Commerzbank-Arena this evening, though, the Gunners managed to bounce back, and in some style.

A hectic, chance-filled affair saw the two sides exchange attacks at will, resulting in a combined total of 34 attempts at goal, more than a shot every 3 minutes.

In the end, though, it was Arsenal who came away with the win, to take early control of the Group F table.

The visitors opened the scoring shortly before the interval, when Joe Willock’s deflected strike looped over the helpless Kevin Trapp into the far corner of the Eintracht net.

A second-half during which either side could easily have bagged 3 or 4 then finally saw a crucial 2nd goal of the night come the way of Unai Emery’s men, courtesy of youngster Bukayo Saka.

And an Arsenal breakaway 2 minutes from time then allowed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to put a series of missed chances behind him to coolly slot home, rounding out an impressive 3-0 victory.

This brought to an end a 16-game unbeaten home streak for Eintracht in Europe, during which the Bundesliga outfit had notched 12 wins.

Saka dazzles

Understandably, on the back of their morale-boosting start to life back in Europe, a number of Arsenal’s stars have since been singled out for special praise by fans and the media alike.

The likes of Joe Willock, Shkodran Mustafi and Emiliano Martinez impressed throughout proceedings for the capital powerhouse, with the latter having kept the Gunners in proceedings with a series of excellent saves.

However, no player has been more widely-showered in praise following tonight’s result at the Commerzbank-Arena than Bukayo Saka.

18-year-old wide-man Saka came up through the youth ranks in north London, before first being handed a chance to prove his worth as part of the club’s first-team setup last season.

And, though he went on to notch just 4 appearances across all competitions, it quickly became clear why the English youth international has, for some time, been viewed as one of the brightest talents on Arsenal’s books.

It was tonight, though, that saw Saka not only solidify his status as a potential Gunners star in the making, but, all told, announce himself onto football’s world stage.

The 18-year-old had a hand in all 3 of his side’s goals in Franfurt, setting up Joe Willock’s opener and Aubameyang’s clincher, either side of finding the net with a superb strike of his own.

Even aside from his contribution to Arsenal’s goals, though, Saka looked a danger throughout proceedings tonight.

The teen possesses all of the traits required of a modern attacker, combining pace, touch, a sumptuous left foot, the ability to beat his man in one-on-one situations and, evidently based on his latest return, finished product.

Perhaps most impressive of all regarding Saka’s display, though, was the Englishman’s courage.

Despite being thrown in at the deep end for his first appearance of the campaign in an absolute cauldron of noise in Germany’s centre, Saka didn’t blink, looking assured in his abilities and ready to take responsibility each and every time he got on the ball.

In an atmosphere where so many of his age would no doubt have withered, the youngster flourished.

There were of course moments of fleeting inexperience where Saka’s lack of playing-time at the top level was evident, but the key was that he tried time and time again to make the difference, in a real leader’s showing.

If Arsenal’s coaching staff, and most-importantly fans, remain patient and allow their latest prodigious talent to flourish without the weight of over the top expectations on his young shoulders, then it looks safe to say that the Gunners may well have a real star in the making on their hands.
